Embracing Meditative Drawing - My journey
Mar 31, 2025
Recently, I embarked on a transformative journey through a Mark Making as a Practice course with the talented Lorraine Glessner. This journey led me to discover the art of meditative drawing, a practice that has since become an integral part of my life.

From the very beginning, the process of mindful drawing captivated me. This quiet and reflective relaxation technique has provided stress relief, focused creativity, creative therapy, and artistic mindfulness. There's an unparalleled joy in letting my mind wander and my hands create without constraints. It's liberating, and the impact on my art has been profound. I've noticed a marked improvement in my technical skills, and more importantly, my ability to express myself has reached new heights. Simply making time in the morning with my coffee and soft music changes the way my day unfolds.
I've been experimenting with liquid charcoal and watercolor on watercolor paper in my calming art exercises. This combination has opened a new world of expression for me through artistic mindfulness and drawing meditation. The liquid charcoal flows freely when water is applied and brings a depth and intensity to the artwork, creating a dramatic backdrop for my pieces. I love how it's dark and moody, yet filled with potential for subtlety.
With a delicate touch of watercolor, I’m able to introduce color into my drawings, adding layers of intrigue and mystery. The color is never overpowering—just a gentle caress that enhances the drama of the charcoal. Creating these pieces has been a dance between intensity and subtlety, chaos and order and I learn something new each time I practice.
What I’ve learned along the way is that it’s okay if a piece doesn’t turn out as planned. Some drawings turn out great while others end up in the collage pile. But every sketch is a step in the right direction because showing up is the most vital part of this meditative practice. Whether the outcome is magical or mediocre, the act of creation itself is what truly matters.

Meditative drawing has taught me a vital lesson: you really must just do it. The practice of drawing guides me to a place of mindfulness and presence, allowing each mark be an element of expression. By consistently engaging in this meditative process, I've discovered new dimensions of creativity and self-awareness.
I encourage you to try meditative drawing for yourself. Let go of expectations and let the materials guide you. Embrace the messiness, the beauty, and everything in between. You might find, as I did, that this practice offers a sanctuary for the mind and a canvas for the soul.
Have you tried meditative drawing, or are you considering it? I’d love to hear about your experiences and what materials you’ve been exploring with. Feel free to share in the comments below!
