Alaska-at home in the wild

I was content in Alaska, to say the least. Spending time on the water, surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife of Southeast Alaska, was an unforgettable experience.
Where else can you spend a beautiful day fishing near Prince of Wales Island, catching wild coho salmon and Pacific halibut, while humpback whales surface nearby and sea otters drift through the water beside you? Above us, magnificent bald eagles watched from the trees, adding to the magic of an already incredible Alaska fishing adventure.
It is a long journey via airplane from Knoxville, Tennessee to Craig, Alaska (approximately 10,500 miles) but well worth it. As we descended into Craig, Alaska, from Ketchikan aboard our small 10-passenger plane, I realized what a beautiful adventure was about to unfold. Far below, the Pacific shimmered in brilliant shades of blue, framed by towering green mountains that seemed to rise straight from the sea.
The coastline meandered like lace along the water, while evergreen trees stretched as far as the eye could see.
Old logging roads, reclaimed by the forest, traced delicate lines across the mountainsides.
During our stay, we are being hosted by Dreamcatcher Bed & Breakfast while fishing with Prince of Wales Sportfishing. We are here for 4 nights and 5 days with three full days of fishing on the pacific ocean.
This was our lovely view off the deck. We enjoyed a bonfire and fabulous food and hospitality with a warm, friendly and family atmosphere.
We enjoyed three full days of fishing for coho and king salmon and two days to fish for our limit of one halibut per day. Our Captain Howie was the best!
Two out of our three days were beautiful and sunny. We only experienced one day where it was pretty rough and chilly, around 50 degrees and rainy. But we hung in there and had a fantastic time. Our captain took great care of us and we were toasty warm and dry inside out ca bin. I highly recommend Prince of Whales Sportfishing and Dream Catcher Bed & Breakfast in Craig, Alaska for your fishing trip. We had excellent food, warm and friendly family hosts, hospitality and great accommodations all the way around.
We took a side trip to Ketchikan and Saxman to enjoy the sights of the city and learn about the history and culture. I fell in love with the totem poles and the native Tlingit art. Each totem tells a story of a family or klan.
Our long journey home included a beautiful sunset over Seattle and a much-needed nap during our flight through Dallas to Knoxville. When we finally collected the 120 pounds of fresh-frozen fillets from baggage claim, we found ourselves reminiscing about our time on the water in Alaska.
We talked about the wonderful recipes we had collected during the trip and imagined all the ways we would prepare and enjoy the bounty we had brought home. But more than anything, we were already wondering when we could return and do it all again.
That, to me, is the true sign of a great vacation.
